  • Norwegian : habitational name from any of several farmsteads, most of them named with Old Norse urð ‘scree’, ‘rock-strewn slope’ + nes ‘promontory’, ‘headland’. In Sogne, the original name is Ornes, denoting a farmstead on or near a jutting headland.
