  • French : from a derivative of Old French turme, Old Occitan turma ‘troop’, ‘band’, also ‘flock of animals’, so probably an occupational name for a shepherd.
  • The name is frequent in New England, but very rare in Canada: the marriage of a Breton so named is recorded in 1762 in Sainte-Foy, Quebec.
