Family name origins & meanings

  • Irish (County Wicklow) : probably derived from French Truelle (according to Morlet a Norman metonymic occupational name for a mason or builder, from truelle ‘spatula used for mixing and applying mortar’, ‘trowell’), or alternatively of the same origin as Trowell; it was taken from England to Ireland in the 17th century.
