- French : occupational name from the agent derivative of Old French troter ‘to walk fast’ (see Trotter 1).
- A Trottier from the Perche region of France is documented in Quebec City in 1646, as lord of Desruisseaux and Desaulniers. The family also bear the secondary surnames Bellecourt and <xref>Belcourt</xref>.
