Family name origins & meanings

  • French : from toupin, which in medieval French meant ‘spinning-top’, possibly a nickname; in Occitan, however, it denotes a small earthenware pot and was probably a metonymic occupational name for a potter.
  • A Toupin of unknown regional origin is documented in Quebec City in 1645. The secondary surnames Du Sault, <xref>Dussault</xref>, and <xref>Lapierre</xref> are associated.
