Family name origins & meanings

  • Polish (Topór) and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic) : from Polish topór ‘axe’, ‘battleaxe’, presumably a metonymic occupational name for a maker or bearer of such, or in the case of the Jewish name an ornamental adoption. In some instances the Polish name may derive from the same word in the sense ‘coat of arms’.
