Family name origins & meanings

  • Greek (Tolis) : from a short form of the personal name Apostolis, variant of Apostolos.
  • Possibly an altered form of the English surnames Tole, from a personal name (Old English Tola, Old Norse Toli), or Tolles, also from a personal name (Old English Toll, an unattested name found in various place names such as Tollesbury and Tolleshunt) or Anglo-Scandinavian Toll, an unattested short form of Old Norse þorleifr, or perhaps in some cases a topographic name from a southern dialect term toll ‘clump of trees’.
