• Japanese : though more commonly written with characters meaning ‘jewel tree’, the original meaning of the name is probably ‘rice paddy planter’. It is found mostly in the Ōsaka region. In the Ryūkyū Islands the name is pronounced Tamagusuku and means ‘jeweled castle’.
