- Scottish and English : habitational name from any of various minor places named with Old English somer ‘summer’ + hyll ‘hill’, i.e. hill used for summer grazing. In Scotland there is one such place in the parish of New Machar in Aberdeenshire, and another in Ayton, Berwickshire.
