Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian : from the personal name Sulpizio (Latin Sulpicius, the name of a famous and powerful family in ancient Rome). The name was borne by various saints, including St. Sulpicius Severus (d. 591), bishop of Borges in France, not to be confused with the writer and ascetic Sulpicius Severus (c. 363–c. 420) of Aquitaine, the biographer of St. Martin of Tours.
