- Altered form of Dutch Steygers, Stygers, which may be a metonymic occupational name for a scaffolder, from Middle Dutch ste(i)ger ‘step’, ‘stairs’, ‘scaffold’, or alternatively a habitational name from Stegers (French Estaires) in French Flanders. In Limburg this is a topographic name for someone who lived by an ascending track, from a derivative of stege, steeg ‘(steep) path’.
