- Eastern German : from a reduced pet form of the Slavic personal name Stanisław (see Stanislaw).
- South German : unexplained. In Germany the spelling Stenz (pronounced ‘stents’) is more common than Stentz, and it is likely that some immigrant families with that name may have added the -t- in order to preserve the original pronunciation.
