Family name origins & meanings

  • Greek : from a Greek personal name, a reduced form of Efstathios, classical Greek Eustathios ‘well-grounded’, ‘firm’, ‘steadfast’ (from eu ‘well’ + stathēs ‘standing’, a derivative of histēmi ‘to stand’). In the early Middle Ages this name became confused with Eustakhios ‘fruitful’ (see Eustace). Eustathios was the name of several saints and patriarchs of the Eastern Church.
