Family name origins & meanings

  • Irish (of Welsh origin) : habitational name from a place in Pembrokeshire called Stackpole from a stack of rocks on the coast at the entrance to Broadhaven, from which settlers of Norman descent made their way into Ireland; probably derived from Old Norse stakkr ‘stack’ + polr ‘pool’. The name is recorded in Dublin as early as 1200, and has been Gaelicized as de Stacapúl; bearers were also known as Galldubh ‘black stranger’.
