  • Polish (Słoboda), Czech, Slovak, and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : habitational name from any of various places named with Slavic sloboda ‘freedom’, denoting an estate or village that was exempt from paying tribute or taxes. In Poland there are several places so called, in particular in Białystok, Rzeszów, and Suwałki voivodeships.
