  • German : from an agent derivative of Middle High German siz ‘seat’, ‘domicile’ (see Sitz).
  • Jewish (Ashkenazic) : from Yiddish zitsn ‘to sit’, possibly applied as a nickname for a stallholder in a marketplace, or else for someone who spent most of his time in study.
