  • Scottish : habitational name from a place near Selkirk, also spelled Synton. In the 12th and 13th centuries it is recorded several times as Sintun, from an unexplained first element + Old English tūn ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’. In the British Isles, the surname is now found mainly in northern Ireland.
