  • North German : from Middle Low German schūr ‘shower of rain’ or ‘bad storm’, in any of several possible senses. It may be a nickname for an easily excitable person, an occupational name for the warden of a park or piece of common land (from the same word in the sense ‘protection’; compare Schuetz), or a nickname from the same word in the sense ‘clever’.
