  • Southern Italian : from the medieval Greek personal name Skepis, a derivative of the vocabulary word skepē ‘cover’, ‘protection’, commemorating the legend of Our Lady of the Protecting Veil (Hagia Skepē), according to which the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Andrew the Fool extending a veil over the cathedral of St. Sophia in Constantinople.
