  • Japanese : written two ways, both meaning ‘(one who lives) at the bottom of the slope’, this surname is common in all parts of Japan, but especially in the west and the Ryūkyū Islands. It is listed in the Shinsen shōjiroku, and so some bearers have connections with ancient nobility.
