Family name origins & meanings

  • Altered spelling of German Romfeld, from Middle Low German rüm- ‘to clear (land)’ + feld ‘open country’, ‘field’, a topographic name or possibly a metonymic occupational name for someone engaged in clearing woodland, or in some cases a habitational name for someone from Romfelt in the Ardennes.
  • Perhaps an altered spelling of Dutch Rumfels, Rundfeldt, a habitational name from Romfelt (see 1).
