Family name origins & meanings

  • English (Yorkshire) : variant of Roper. In southern dialects of English, Old English -ā- became Middle English -ō-, whereas in Yorkshire -a- was preserved and gave rise to this form of the surname.
  • Possibly also an altered spelling of German Röper or Röber (see Roeber).
