Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : variant of Ranta ‘shore’, with the local suffix -la. Originally the surname was probably a habitational name, from a farm so called; later it was also adopted as an ornamental name during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often in place of Swedish surnames containing the element strand ‘shore’. It is found chiefly in southwestern Finland.
