Family name origins & meanings

  • French : from Old French ramel, diminutive of ra(i)m ‘branch’ (Latin ramus), hence a topographic name for someone who lived in a thickly wooded area. It is possible that it was also used as a nickname for someone who had some particular connection with Palm Sunday, for which the French term is (dimanche des) rameaux.
