Family name origins & meanings

  • German and Swiss German : from Middle High German rīsch, rūsch ‘reed’, ‘rush’, hence a topographic name for someone who lived near a reed bed, or perhaps a metonymic occupational name for someone who used or harvested reeds.
  • South German : variant of Rösch (see Roesch).
