Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian (Sicily) : from Sicilian pipitone ‘hoopoe’, hence a nickname for someone thought to resemble the bird in some way. The term could also denote a stone-built figure used as a target by children, and so could have been a nickname for someone who was a regular victim of local children’s taunts or persecution.
