Family name origins & meanings

  • French : nickname from Old French pinard, a small medieval coin, so called because it bore the device of a pine cone. The name may have denoted someone who paid a rent of this amount; the term seems also to have been used as a derogatory term for a rich man or miser. This is a frequent name in New England.
  • A Pinard from La Rochelle, France, is documented in Quebec City in 1647.
