Family name origins & meanings

  • Polish (Piątek) : nickname piątek ‘fifth’, ‘Friday’. This may have been from a given name for a fifth child, but more often it is from the name of the day of the week. Illegitimate children were often given the name of the day of the week on which they were baptized; also, converted Jews took as a surname the name of the day on which they were baptized.
