- Italian : variant of Pellicano.
- Italian : in some cases, possibly a variant of Pelacane, an occupational name for a tanner, from spellare ‘to skin’ + cane ‘dog’. However, since the term was also used to denote a rogue or villain, the respelling may have been deliberate.
