  • Scottish : Black quotes other sources which explain this as a variant of Houghton, or of Aughton, which may be a form of Acton; but he offers the example of an Admiral Oughton of Cullen, Banff, who changed his name from Haughty to Oughton in the late 18th or early 19th century.
  • Possibly an altered spelling of Aughton, an English habitational name from any of three places, in Humberside, Lancashire, and South Yorkshire, named with Old English āc ‘oak’ + tūn ‘farmstead’, ‘settlement’.
