- Japanese : it is uncertain whether instances of this name in America are Ōkuma meaning ‘large bear’, found mostly in eastern Japan, or Okuma, meaning ‘interior space’, found mostly in the Ryūkyū Islands. One noble family bearing the former lived in the far west of Japan, in Hizen (now Nagasaki prefecture).
