Family name origins & meanings

  • English and Scottish : topographic name for someone who lived and worked on a moor (see Moore 1). In Scotland the term denoted an official responsible for a moor, whose duties included overseeing the branding of the cattle which roamed on the moor.
  • Dutch and North German : variant of Mohrmann.
