Family name origins & meanings

  • Origin uncertain; possibly an altered spelling of Slavic Marko.
  • Abraham Markoe (1727–1806) was born at St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. About 1770 he moved to Philadelphia, where he organized the Philadelphia Light Horse in 1774. His son (c. 1752–1792) was the poet and playwright Peter Markoe, listed in 1775 in the Pennsylvania Archives as captain of Light Horse, 3d Battalion, Philadelphia City Militia.
