Family name origins & meanings

  • Southern Italian : of uncertain derivation; perhaps originally a nickname, from mal(o) + occhio, i.e. ‘evil eye’, later changed to obscure its meaning (compare Manacorda, from mal(o) + cor(d) ‘bad heart’, and similar). Caracausi’s Greek etymology is not plausible.
