  • Southern Italian : from medieval Greek mandilin ‘headscarf’, presumably a metonymic occupational name for someone who sold scarves or a nickname for someone who habitually wore a scarf. Mandilas is also found as a Greek family name, with derivatives such as Mandilakis.
