Family name origins & meanings

  • French : from the Biblical Hebrew personal name Manasseh, from nashah ‘make to forget’. This was the name of Joseph’s elder son, brother of Ephraim, so named in the hope that Joseph’s father Jacob might begin to forget the sorrows of the past.
