Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian : the word cicero means ‘chickpea’ (later ‘pea’), and the name may have originated as an occupational name or nickname for someone who grew or sold chickpeas, but it is more likely to have been a more flattering nickname for someone regarded as resembling the Roman statesman Cicero in wisdom and statesmanship. See Cicero.
