  • French and Canadian (Lavallée) : topographic name for someone who lived in a valley, Old French val (Latin vallis), with the definite article la; or a habitational name from any of numerous places called Lavallée.
  • French Canadian : secondary surname, used to distinguish a branch of a family (for example the Paquettes) living in a valley, as opposed to others, for example those living by a river (Paquette dit LaRivière).
