- Americanized form of German Lehl or Loehl. In either case, the name is a spelling variant of Lehle or Löhle, pet forms of the personal name Leonhardt.
- The Loehl family came to North America in 1737. Another branch of the family came to North America from Germany via Russia. They settled in southern Russia in the mid 18th century, but kept their German identity. Both branches have adopted the American form Lail as a family name.
