Family name origins & meanings
- German : occupational name for a blanket maker, from Middle High German kotze ‘coarse shaggy woolen cloth’, ‘blanket or garment made of such material’. In Bavaria and Austria kotze is still used to denote the woolen cloth more widely known as Loden.
