Family name origins & meanings

  • Japanese : ‘sunken ground’; variously written, mostly with characters used phonetically. Found mostly in western Japan, apparently taken from several habitational names. Many unrelated families descend from various branches of the Taira, Minamoto, and other great families.
  • Czech and Slovak : from a variant of the personal name Kuba, a pet form of Jakub (see Jacob).
