Family name origins & meanings

  • Czech (Krupník), Polish, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic) : from a noun derivative of kroupa ‘pearl barley’. This may have been an occupational name for a dealer in barley, or a nickname with any of various applications. Yiddish krupnik also means ‘pearl barley soup’, and the Jewish name may also be ornamental.
