Family name origins & meanings

  • Slovenian (Križman) : of uncertain origin. It may be a derivative of the personal name Kristjan, Latin Christianus, formed with the suffix -man (equivalent of German -mann), or a nickname or topographic name from the dialect plant name križman ‘milkwort’ (German bittere Kreuzbume, Latin Polygala amara), which was noted for its medicinal properties. It could also be derived from the archaic adjective križman ‘anointed’, from križmati ‘to anoint’ (derivative of Latin chrisma ‘unction’).
  • Jewish (Ashkenazic) : variant of Kritzman.
