Family name origins & meanings

  • German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : habitational name for someone from Kreisberg (now Hafka) in Slovakia or, in the case of the German name, a topographic name from a field name in Uelzen, Lower Saxony. In many cases the Jewish name may simply be ornamental, from German Kreis ‘circle’ + Berg ‘mountain’, ‘hill’.
