  • German : topographic name for someone who lived by a field or area of open country frequented by crows, from Middle Low German kreie ‘crow’ + fels, a Rhenish form of Feld ‘field’, ‘open country’ (Middle Low German velt). The Rhenish city of Krefeld has the same etymology.
