Family name origins & meanings

  • German : possibly a habitational name from an abandoned settlement called Colbeck, in the district of Wernigerode, in the Harz Mountains.
  • Scandinavian : from Old Norse kaldr ‘cold’ + bekkr ‘stream’, hence presumably either an ornamental name or a topographic name for someone who lived near a cold stream.
