- habitational name from any of the places in eastern Germany named Kietz, from Sorbian kyza ‘hut’, ‘dwelling’ (see 1 above).
- in Western Germany, perhaps also an occupational name for a basketmaker or for a peddler carrying a basket, from the dialect word Kieze ‘basket’.
