  • German, Czech (Kašpar), Slovak (Gašpar), and Slovenian (Kaspar and Kašpar) : from the personal name Kaspar, Kašpar, which was especially popular in central Europe up to the 18th century. From Persian kaehbaed, khazana-dar, or ganjvaer, all meaning ‘treasure bearer’, it was ascribed by popular tradition in Europe to one of the three Magi. The supposed remains of the Magi were taken in the 12th century from Constantinople to Cologne, where they became objects of veneration. See also Baltazar and Melchior.
