Family name origins & meanings

  • Japanese : ‘harvested field’; variously written, with such variation in the characters used for the second syllable that the name can be pronounced either Kano or Kanō. There are several place names of both pronunciations throughout Japan. One Kano family was descended from the Itō branch of the southern Fujiwara. A Kanō family was descended from daimyō of Suruga (now part of Shizuoka prefecture), and another from the Matsudaira family of Kanō-mura in Mikawa (now part of Aichi prefecture).
  • Jewish (Ashkenazic) : see Cohen.
