  • Polish : from a short form of the personal name Jarosław (composed of the elements jaro- ‘young’, ‘robust’ +-sław ‘glory’), or from some other personal name formed with jaro-, or from a dialect form of the personal name Hieronim, Polish form of Greek Hierōnymos (see Jerome).
  • Polish : in some cases it may have originated as a nickname for a vigorous young man, from the adjective jary.
